About SkyMe
SkyMe is a family movie guide designed to help parents quickly understand
whether a movie may be suitable for their child – before pressing play.
We focus on clarity, not censorship: our goal is to give you better
information so that you can make your own decision as a parent.
1. What SkyMe does
- Age guidance – a recommended minimum age (e.g. 6+, 8+, 10+).
- Content flags – short notes on what may be sensitive for children.
- Plain-language overviews – story summaries written for parents, not film critics.
- Quick at-a-glance chips – age, IMDb score and “Top 250” label where applicable.
SkyMe does not tell you what you “must” or “must not” watch.
It simply helps you understand a movie’s tone and themes in advance.
2. How our age guidance works
Our age suggestions are a combination of data and judgement. For each movie
we look at:
- Violence & peril – fights, injuries, war scenes, dangerous situations.
- Scary / disturbing scenes – monsters, jump scares, intense suspense, dark imagery.
- Language – profanity, insults, crude expressions.
- Sexual content & nudity – romantic scenes, suggestive humour, partial or full nudity.
- Substance use – smoking, alcohol, drugs, or glamorised substance use.
- Emotional intensity – themes like death, grief, serious illness, divorce, family conflict.
We combine:
- Official ratings and public metadata where available.
- Structured movie data (genres, keywords, plot outlines, etc.).
- AI-assisted analysis of the story and themes, to highlight
content that may matter to sensitive children.
Because every child is different, our age labels are conservative guidance, not strict rules.
A mature 8-year-old may handle some 10+ content, while a sensitive 11-year-old may prefer younger stories.
3. What SkyMe is not
- Not an official rating board.
SkyMe does not replace legal ratings such as PG, PG-13, etc. - Not a guarantee.
We cannot promise that every detail is captured, or that your child will never be upset. - Not a moral judgement.
A higher age recommendation does not mean a movie is “bad” – only that its themes may be intense. - Not a spoiler-free tool.
Some descriptions briefly mention key plot points in order to explain why a scene may be sensitive.
4. How parents can use SkyMe
You know your child best. Here are a few ways other parents use SkyMe:
- Start from age guidance, then adjust.
If your child is very sensitive, start one or two years younger than their real age. - Read the parent tips before family night.
Check for themes like loss, bullying or intense peril that might need a conversation afterwards. - Talk about the movie together.
Use SkyMe’s notes as a starting point to discuss feelings, values and tough topics in a safe way. - Consider siblings.
If you have children of different ages, we suggest choosing the age of the youngest child watching.
5. Data sources & limitations
SkyMe relies on a mixture of public movie databases and in-house analysis.
For some titles, information may be limited or outdated, especially for very
new or very obscure films.
- Not every scene can always be captured in a short description.
- Different cultures may perceive “scary” or “intense” content differently.
- Updates take time; new cuts or extended versions may change the experience.
If you spot something that feels significantly inaccurate or missing, we welcome your feedback
so that SkyMe can improve over time.
6. A note to parents
SkyMe was created by a parent who loves movies and cares deeply about children’s inner world.
It is not about over-protecting children from every strong emotion, but about giving families
more choice and context.
Some children enjoy mild thrills and complex stories; others need more gentle narratives.
Our hope is that SkyMe helps you find the right story at the right time – so that movie night
becomes a safe place for connection, not a source of unwanted surprises.
If SkyMe has helped your family, thank you for using it.
If you disagree with a rating, your judgement as a parent always comes first.
