Director Matthew Heineman, known for high-stakes documentaries like Cartel Land, originally intended to document only the creation of Batiste’s symphony. However, when Suleika Jaouad’s cancer returned just as filming began, the project’s scope shifted into a dual narrative of art and illness. The film was eventually acquired by Netflix and Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions. Despite the intimate access, Heineman maintained a fly-on-the-wall presence, filming for seven months to capture the rawest moments of the couple’s life.
