🎭 Story Kernel

At its core, 'Sanju' is less about chronicling the sensational headlines of Sanjay Dutt's life and more about exploring the psychological toll of inherited legacy and public perception. The film examines how a son grapples with the immense shadow of his famous parents, using drugs and rebellion as both escape and cry for help. It's driven by Sanju's desperate need for his father's approval while simultaneously rejecting his disciplined world. The narrative frames his life as a constant battle between the constructed public persona—'the terrorist,' 'the addict,' 'the star'—and the vulnerable, flawed man seeking redemption and understanding, primarily from his stoic father.

🎬 Visual Aesthetics

The film employs a dynamic visual language that mirrors Sanjay Dutt's chaotic psyche. The color palette shifts dramatically: the warm, golden hues of his childhood and family moments contrast with the cold, gritty blues and neon-drenched chaos of his drug-addled years in New York and Mumbai. Camera work is intimate and shaky during personal crises, adopting a more stable, almost theatrical framing during public scandals and court scenes, visually separating his private torment from the media spectacle. The recreation of 80s and 90s Bombay has a textured, almost nostalgic grain, while the prison sequences use harsh, flat lighting to convey institutional bleakness.

🔍 Details & Easter Eggs

1
Early in the film, young Sanju mimics his father's walk and dialogue delivery in a mirror. This foreshadows his lifelong struggle to step out of his father's shadow while unconsciously emulating him, a tension that defines their relationship.
2
During the prison sequence, the number '10255' is visible on Sanju's uniform. This was Sanjay Dutt's actual prisoner number in Arthur Road Jail, a small authentic detail adding realism to the dramatization.
3
In scenes where Sanju is under the influence of drugs, the background score often incorporates distorted, slowed-down versions of classic Hindi film songs, subtly linking his addiction to the cinematic fantasy world he was born into.

💡 Behind the Scenes

Ranbir Kapoor underwent a drastic physical transformation, losing and gaining over 20 kilograms multiple times to portray different phases of Dutt's life. The prosthetic team used over 20 different looks. Director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi conducted over 300 hours of interviews with Sanjay Dutt. Several scenes were shot at real locations, including Sanjay Dutt's actual house in Mumbai and the iconic Leopold Cafe. Paresh Rawal, who played Sunil Dutt, spent time with the Dutt family to understand the patriarch's mannerisms and voice modulation.
