Upon Open Sky marks the feature film directorial debut of siblings Mariana and Santiago Arriaga. The screenplay was written by their father, the world-renowned writer Guillermo Arriaga, known for his work on Babel and 21 Grams. Interestingly, Guillermo wrote this specific script over thirty years ago in the 1990s, but it remained unproduced until his children decided to bring it to the screen. The film was shot on location in the state of Coahuila, Mexico, under harsh conditions to maintain authenticity. It had its world premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival in the Orizzonti section.
