The film was shot on location in Vancouver during an unusually warm December, requiring artificial snow for most exterior scenes. Lead actress Torrey DeVitto actually learned calligraphy for her role and wrote many of the letters seen on screen herself. Director Chad Michael Murray insisted on using practical effects for the letter-writing sequences rather than CGI, resulting in authentic ink spills and paper textures. The production team consulted with a handwriting analyst to ensure each character's writing style reflected their personality traits accurately.
